The electorate is based on the southern part of the city of Lower Hutt. It was formed in 1996 from the old electorates of Pencarrow and Eastern Hutt. Hutt South consists of Lower Hutt, Hutt Valley, Naenae, Petone, Wainuiomata, and Eastbourne.[1]

History

At the first MMP election in 1996, Hutt South replaced the earlier electorate of Pencarrow, which was then held by Trevor Mallard. Mallard, currently the shadow leader of the house, has been returned at every general election since.[2]
